Let’s talk about FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). I know—it sounds like a lot of work, but trust me, it’s worth it. This form opens doors to financial aid like the Pell Grant, which can help you go to school for free, and the $5,000 Education and Training Voucher (ETV) funds available for students aging out of foster care. These are your opportunities, and I’m here to walk you through it.

Why FAFSA Is So Important

FAFSA is your ticket to getting financial aid for college or vocational school. If you want those $5,000 ETV funds, FAFSA is a must. Plus, the Pell Grant can help cover tuition anywhere in the nation. But heads up—those funds are limited, so don’t wait to get started.

Give Yourself Grace

Filling out FAFSA can feel overwhelming—it’s a lot of information. But here’s the thing: You don’t have to finish it all at once. Start with what you can, save your progress, and come back to it later. It’s totally normal to take it step by step.

If you’re feeling stuck, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Your education specialist or transition coach is there to guide you. You’ve got a whole team rooting for you!

Things You’ll Need to Know

Here’s what you’ll want to have in mind before you start:

  • Parental Income: For most foster youth, this will be $0—don’t stress about it.

  • What School You’re Attending: Even if you’re unsure, just pick one. You can always update it later. (I think I changed mine twice before it was finalized!)

  • What You’re Studying: Again, this doesn’t have to be set in stone—just choose something to get the form submitted.

Step-by-Step: How to Fill Out FAFSA

1. Create an FSA ID: This is your unique username and password to access the FAFSA website.

2. Log In: Go to studentaid.gov and use your FSA ID to start.

3. Start a New Application: Click “Start New Form” to begin.

4. Answer Dependency Status Questions: Most foster youth qualify as independent, which

means you won’t need to include parental financial info.

5. Provide Your Info: Enter your name, Social Security number, and contact details.

6. Select Schools: List the colleges or vocational programs you’re considering.

7. Add Financial Info: Include your income and any other relevant details.

8. Review and Submit: Double-check everything for accuracy before submitting.

A Few Pro Tips

• Deadlines Matter: Each state and school has its own deadlines, so stay on top of them.

• Be Ready for Verification: Sometimes you’ll need to provide extra documents to confirm your info—it’s no big deal, just be prepared.

• Accuracy Is Key: Mistakes can cause delays, so take your time reviewing everything.

You’ve Got This

I know this process can feel like a lot, but don’t let it intimidate you. FAFSA is just one step toward creating the life you want. Take it one piece at a time, lean on your support system, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

Remember, this is your future, and every step you take is getting you closer to your dreams.
